When choosing a VPS, "being close to the target users" is the core principle for measuring network performance. This article is based on practical evaluation and compares the actual performance of VPS in the United States and Hong Kong when facing users in different regions. The purpose is to give executable deployment suggestions to help operation and maintenance and product teams reduce latency and improve user experience.
This evaluation focuses on latency (Ping), bandwidth throughput, packet loss rate and connection stability. Active detection from multiple monitoring points to the target VPS is used, combined with concurrent downloads on real request lines and TCP/UDP performance testing, to ensure that the data is comparable and of reference value, making it easier for target users to make choices.
Proximity to target users can significantly reduce propagation delays and routing hops caused by physical distance, thereby improving first packet time and interactive response. For highly interactive applications (such as games, real-time messaging) and web applications that require a fast first-of-a-fold experience, geographic proximity often determines the user experience more than raw bandwidth.
Latency tests show that for users in mainland China and southeastern Asia, Hong Kong nodes generally have lower one-way and round-trip latencies; while for North American users, US nodes have obvious latency advantages. Latency differences are affected by fiber optic cable paths, entry and exit gateways, and carrier interconnections. Closer proximity to the target users usually results in more stable and low latency.
Bandwidth measurement focuses on concurrent throughput and peak performance. Hong Kong nodes can often provide higher effective throughput when distributing large traffic to Asia, especially when interconnected with local ISPs; US nodes perform stably on trans-Pacific bandwidth and are suitable for large file distribution and high-concurrency scenarios for North American users.

The packet loss test revealed that network quality is greatly affected by path quality and interconnection between operators. The packet loss rate of Hong Kong nodes is usually low when facing surrounding ISPs, but cross-border traffic may jitter when there is congestion; if US nodes have excellent routing during long-distance transmission, the stability can also meet the needs of most online applications. The key lies in choosing the appropriate upstream link.
BGP routing policies, nearest exits, and multi-line access will significantly change the actual delay and packet loss performance. Hong Kong data centers usually have the advantage of multiple Asia-Pacific network interconnections, while US nodes benefit from North American backbone and cloud interconnections. When evaluating, you should check Traceroute and multi-point detection results to determine the true routing path.
US VPS The advantage lies in low latency and good Internet backbone access for North American and Latin American users, which is suitable for global distribution and cloud service integration. However, when facing Asian users, physical distance causes inevitable delays, and the trans-Pacific link may experience jitter during peak hours, which needs to be alleviated through CDN or multi-node strategies.
Hong Kong VPS usually has latency and throughput advantages when connecting mainland China and neighboring markets in Asia, and is suitable for businesses targeting users in the Greater China Circle; at the same time, Hong Kong's network is also more flexible for international exports. However, if the user base is in Europe and the United States, the Hong Kong node is not the best choice, and the cost performance and compliance needs need to be evaluated based on business distribution.
It is recommended to adopt a hybrid architecture: deploy main nodes where target users gather, supplemented by CDN or edge nodes to distribute static resources. This combination can combine low latency of dynamic interactions with global coverage of static content, reduce single-point bandwidth pressure, and improve overall availability and disaster recovery capabilities.
The selection logic should be based on user distribution, application type and budget: interactive applications should be close to users first; large file distribution can give priority to bandwidth and egress links; global users recommend hybrid multi-region deployment. Before actual deployment, conduct Ping/Traceroute and concurrent download tests to verify the real network path and throughput performance.
Look closer to the target users to see which VPS is faster, the United States or Hong Kong. The conclusion depends on the geographical distribution and application characteristics of the users. Hong Kong is more suitable for serving users in Asia and mainland China, and the United States is suitable for North America and global distribution. In practice, delay, bandwidth, packet loss and routing evaluation should be combined, and a hybrid node and CDN strategy should be adopted to obtain the best user experience.
